- Selected by Pittsburgh in the 4th round of the June 2002 draft...signed by Pittsburgh as a draft-and-follow on 5/25/03...signed by Pirates' scout Tom Barnard...played one season of JUCO baseball at Odessa Junior College (Texas), where he went 10-3 with a 2.22 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 85.1 IP on the mound and hit .420 with 12 HR and 81 RBIs at the plate...signed a letter-of-intent with San Diego State, but elected to attend junior college...2002 graduate of Elkins High School in Missouri City, TX, the same high school as (former Pirates' starting pitcher) Kip Wells (1995 graduate) and )Dodgers' first baseman) James Loney...as a senior, went 12-0 with a 1.98 ERA to lead Elkins to a 35-1 record, the Texas 5A State Championship and a season-ending No. 1 national ranking by USA Today...was an All-State selection following both his junior and senior seasons...began his high school career at Spring High School (Texas), where he was a teammate of 2003 World Series MVP Josh Beckett...was a member of the USA Baseball Junior National Team in the summer of 2001...at the age of 12, led Spring Northwest (Texas) 45 Little League to the 1995 Little League World Series Championship Game in Williamsport, Pa, where his team lost to Chinese Taipei...the following summer as a 13-year old, his Spring team captured the Junior Little League World Series championship...resides in Missouri City, Texas.
